CASE STUDY

Menagerie Brand Design + Marketing

The Changemaker

Menagerie Boutique was founded on the mission: Stand for something small.

A clean beauty space housed in a vintage Airstream in Portland, OR., selling emerging ethical brands that focus on simple ingredients. We opened Menagerie to submerge ourselves in the full process of bringing independent beauty brands to market; from ideation to retail shelf, while inspiring people to do more with less.

The Landscape

We knew we needed to develop a large in-person and online following right out of the gate. With other clean beauty shops already starting to pop up nationwide, it was imperative to make a big splash on the scene from day one.

Project Goals

01.

Grab the attention of shoppers with an entirely new and unique retail experience.

02.

Grow and support small product makers that have little to no experience selling at retail.

03.

Create buzz on social media with novel brand positioning, in order to grow a loyal following.

Our Approach

We created a physical space that begged to be entered, photographed, and discovered.

The design of the store enticed customers to engage in social sharing, which meant the idea was designed to spread quickly throughout the clean beauty community.

Visual Language

We developed a tuned-in brand identity and environment that complimented the brand vision and customer worldview:

Honesty, simplicity, & self-discovery.

We developed our own line of private label products to feel entirely approachable; aimed at seasoned clean product advocates as well as new-comers to the industry alike.

Marketing & Communication

We relied heavily on social media and collaborations to grow the business and build brand awareness.

The physical store was located in an area of the city that was visited frequently by travel buffs, so our strategy focused on reaching people who were exploring the city for the first time, as well as appealing to local shoppers.

Social Media

Content, Campaigns, Influencer Marketing + Collaborations

Our social community was over 10k strong and growing daily when it was only a year old.

We approached our social space in a genuine, knowledgeable, supportive way, encouraging personal beauty growth. Our strong following was due to strategic collaboration with beauty bloggers and health industry leaders, makers, small business owners, as well as conversations with those just stepping into the green beauty space for the first time.

The Results

For many of the brands we carried on our sheleves, we were their first-ever wholesale account. We fostered open, honest dialog about what generates sales and how packaging and design can impact growth for small companies.

Many of our first-time brands went on to hold retail accounts like Target, Anthropologie, and Credo.

By the Numbers

With Social Media and word-of-mouth marketing making up the majority of our efforts, we were able to turn a profit after just 1 year in business.
