A Celebration of East African Food & Culture

When they first arrived to Detroit as immigrants from Burundi in 2015, Nadia Nijimbere and Hamissi Mamba had to make a choice. They could either go back to school, or they could start a local business.

We first met Mamba in 2018. After listening to them talk about their passion for food and family, their East African culture, and love for Detroit as a foundation for connection, Mamba said to us: "I'm openning a restuarant and I want you to do my branding." With a story like Mamba and Nadia's, there was no way we could say no.

#DetroitNiNyumbani (Detroit is Home)

After brand lift-off, Baobab Fare has become a staple in Detroit’s food scene. The restaurant achieved notoriety starting with winning local competitions like Hatch Detroit, Motor City Match, and going on to become a James Beard Semifinalist and Chopped winner. Baobab Fare is admired among local and global foodies and hometown neighbors alike.

Leading with Purpose

But most importantly, the owners of this widely loved eatery refused to stop at food.

Mamba and Nadia serve their community in various other ways, with one being their continual work with Freedom House Detroit to give back through funding humanitarian aid.
